A tragic incident on a major Lithuanian roadway has left an Estonian man dead and authorities searching for a suspect vehicle. The incident occurred on February 9th around 4:20 AM on the A5 highway near Marijampolė, prompting a full-scale emergency response.

The initial alert came not from a witness, but from the iPhone of the victim, a 39-year-old Estonian citizen. According to reports from the Kaunas Fire and Rescue Service, an automatic distress signal was sent at approximately 4:14 AM, indicating the device’s owner had been involved in a traffic incident near Puskelnių village, within the Sanavos seniūnija.

When emergency services attempted to contact the phone’s owner, there was no response. This triggered an immediate dispatch of firefighters, police officers, and paramedics to the scene.

Scene Investigation Reveals Unanswered Questions

Upon arrival, first responders discovered the body of the man on the shoulder of the A5 highway, kilometer marker 54, along the Kaunas-Marijampolė-Suvalkai route. A Peugeot 3008 was found parked nearby with the engine running, but showed no signs of damage. Critically, no other vehicles were present at the scene.

Medical personnel quickly confirmed the man’s death, citing multiple injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. A senior official stated that the circumstances strongly suggest a hit-and-run incident.

Lithuanian authorities immediately closed the A5 highway in the direction of Kaunas–Marijampolė to facilitate a thorough investigation. Police are currently working to identify the vehicle responsible for the collision and are appealing for any information from potential witnesses.
