In the state of Manipur, located in northeastern India, violent clashes between ethnic groups have been ongoing for the past two months, resulting in tragic consequences. According to the BBC, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least 130 individuals and has displaced over 60,000 people.

The root of the conflict stems from the largest ethnic group in Manipur, the Meitei, seeking recognition as a registered ethnic group. They have put forth a request to obtain a “scheduled tribe” status, which grants constitutional rights to a specific quota of government services, educational placements, and political representation.

However, this demand has elicited strong objections from other recognized ethnic groups in the region. These groups believe that the Meitei, already enjoying a political majority in the state, do not require the same level of quota-based benefits. As a result, the Kuki ethnic group initiated demonstrations in May, leading to a deteriorating situation over time.

On Wednesday, a horrifying video began circulating on social media, capturing a mob parading around two naked women. The video shows the women being dragged, sexually harassed, and ultimately placed in a field. The police have opened an investigation into gang rape, and they have already arrested one man, with more expected to be apprehended soon.

Authorities have confirmed that the incident occurred on May 4 in Thoubal district. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), representing indigenous tribal communities, released a statement stating that the incident took place in a village in Kangpokpi district and involved women from the Kuki-Zo tribal community. The ITLF alleges that the women were subjected to a gang rape following the burning down of the village and the fatal beating of two men by the same mob.

The release of the video has sparked widespread outrage in India, prompting politicians to speak out. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as a “disgrace” to the country and assured the nation that justice would be served. This statement marks the first time the Prime Minister has commented on the riots in Manipur. Opposition leaders have criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for not taking sufficient action to quell the violence.

The video has further ignited calls for justice and accountability, with demands for immediate action against those responsible for the heinous act. The incident highlights the need for increased efforts to address ethnic tensions and promote peace in the region.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of these violent clashes, it is crucial that steps are taken to prevent such tragic events from recurring and to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens in Manipur.
