The European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) will develop a new joint declaration by June 2022 – the next summit of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced by the President of the European Council Charles Michel on Wednesday, October 6.

“We will develop a new political declaration with NATO before the NATO summit in June 2022,” he said in a statement following the first day of an informal EU summit in Slovenia.

He also said that the EU is going to expand the ability to act autonomously in areas such as defense and economics.

“To become more effective and active in the international arena, the EU needs to expand its ability to act autonomously as an economic force – through our single market, standards (climate, energy, digital, industrial policy), as well as in the field of EU security and defense”, – told by Charles Michel.

In addition, the EU “will reduce dependence and achieve resilience in areas such as energy, digital technology, cybersecurity, industrial policy, trade and strengthening the single market.”

The President also promised, starting in October, to regularly return to these issues in the European Council.

On Tuesday, October 5, it became known that the concept of the future strategic autonomy of the EU was the main topic of an informal private dinner of European leaders in Slovenia. In terms of the concept of strategic security, the positions of the European leaders were generally close.
