New Delhi: Pesticides or insecticides being found in food items cannot be tolerated at all. A similar incident happened in Singapore. This was Everest Company’s Fish Curry Masala. After this, Singapore authorities have issued an order to recall this product. The level of ethylene oxide in this spice was found to be more than the permissible limit. Ethylene oxide is a type of pesticide.

instructions given to the importer

Our colleague ET Online has reported that the Singapore Food Agency issued a statement in this regard on Thursday. In this statement, Everest Spices importer SP Muthiah and Sons Pvt Ltd was directed to initiate the recall process. This means that this spice cannot be sold in the Singapore market. It will be sent back to India.

Ethylene oxide cannot be used in food

Ethylene oxide fumigation is done to agricultural products to prevent microbial contamination. According to the Singapore Food Agency, this chemical is not authorized for use in foods. The agency says “Under Singapore’s food regulations, ethylene oxide is permitted to be used in the sterilization of spices.”

Health related complications due to its consumption
The SFA says that if ethylene oxide is consumed in small quantities through food, there is no immediate danger. But prolonged exposure can lead to health complications. The SFA has stressed, “There is no immediate danger from the consumption of such contaminated food. However, the use of this substance should be minimized as much as possible.”

customers don’t use it
The food agency’s advisory states “Consumers who have purchased the contaminated product are strongly advised not to consume it. Additionally, individuals who have consumed the affected products and have health concerns , They are urged to consult doctors.”
Manufacturer Everest is yet to comment on this development.
