WELT: The perspective of many people in Europe or North America is that Russia’s war in Ukraine is a Russo-Ukrainian war within a specific territory. Does that explain the distance of many people?
Sannikow: This is fundamentally wrong. This war is directed against the West. I want to emphasize that it was openly prepared. The whole world saw it. As early as 2009, the Russians in Belarus simulated attacks on NATO as part of their Zapad maneuver. One scenario was a nuclear attack on Warsaw, not Ukraine. It threatened to break through the Suwalki Gap and cut off the Baltic from the rest of NATO territory. No one in the West has responded to this. Today Russia is primarily concerned with Ukraine – right. But Putin hates Europe. He wants to divide and weaken Europe. That is his geopolitical vision.
