The Moscow authorities want to start paying for travel using face recognition technology at all metro stations by the end of 2021, RIA Novosti reported, citing the city’s Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov.

“By the end of the year, we want to launch Face Pay at all stations without exception,” Liksutov said.

According to him, the technology has been tested for several months at individual metro stations. “Our employees and partners of the service are participating, and they have become participants in test focus groups. They left their biometric data, tied a bank card, and when they pass through the turnstile, the money is debited from the card, ”Liksutov explained.

He said that a metro passenger will have to stop at the right side turnstile. The system “recognizes” him, debits money from his bank card in one and a half seconds, and the passenger goes through the turnstile.

Earlier, Liksutov reported that Face Pay technology is also planned to be launched at the ticket offices in the metro. The vice mayor added that the technology will not be mandatory for passengers and will be offered as an option.
