Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban Partner to Release Second-Generation AI-Powered Smart Glasses

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has teamed up with popular sunglasses maker Ray-Ban to create an upgraded version of their artificial intelligence-powered smart glasses. The new Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, equipped with enhanced features, will be available for purchase online and in retail stores starting on October 17.

These second-generation smart glasses aim to capture special moments with their built-in 12MP camera, while also providing the convenience of built-in speakers and a five-microphone system. According to Meta, wearers can utilize the glasses to livestream, play music or podcasts, send messages, and even make calls through social media platforms.

The smart glasses are designed with improved audio, boasting extended bass and higher maximum volume options. Meta AI, an integrated artificial intelligence assistant, is also incorporated into the glasses, providing hands-free assistance. Users can activate Meta AI by simply saying “Hey Meta” and dictating their commands.

In terms of design, customers have the option to choose from five frame colors, including matte black, shiny black, blue, black, and brown. The glasses offer over 150 different custom frame and lens combinations, ensuring a personalized experience. They can even be equipped with prescription lenses if needed.

Other notable features of the new smart glasses include a maximum battery life of 36 hours, an upgraded processor, and a slimmer and lighter design. The starting price for the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses is set at $299.

The partnership between Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban’s parent company, EssilorLuxottica, has proven successful since the launch of the first-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in 2021. With a global smart glasses market projected to reach $218.9 million in value in 2022, according to Report Linker, the collaboration aims to capitalize on the growing demand for wearable technology.

Competitors in the smart glasses market include prominent consumer tech manufacturers such as Bose, Razer, and Lenovo. However, given the popularity and reputation of the Ray-Ban brand, the Meta smart glasses are expected to stand out in the market.

Investments in the smart glasses industry have been driving its growth, attracting both Millennial and Gen Z consumers. Report Linker predicts a compound annual growth rate of 9.5% for the smart glasses market from 2023 to 2028.

With the release of the second-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban aim to offer consumers a stylish and technologically advanced accessory that seamlessly integrates AI capabilities into everyday life.
