A vibrant display of autumn colors is unfolding across the United States, with peak foliage currently observed in a wide swath of the country. Where to Find Peak Fall Colors Now
According to data released on Friday from Explore Fall,several states are currently experiencing peak color. These include portions of Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Missouri, Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, West Virginia, pennsylvania, Ohio, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
However, the peak has already passed for areas further west and north. Montana, idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maine, northern New Hampshire, Vermont, and western Colorado are largely past their prime.
Other states are showing promising color progress.Areas of Indiana, Illinois, and Kansas are reporting “high color,” while parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and the Texas Panhandle are displaying “moderate” hues.In contrast, fall foliage is currently “low” in parts of California and Texas, and also most of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Regions including Florida, South Texas, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast Coast are experiencing “little to no” fall foliage at this time.
Timing Peak Viewing Across the Country
An AccuWeather map, provided to Newsweek on Thursday, suggests that late September through mid-October represents the optimal viewing window for peak fall colors in the Northeast, Midwest, and portions of the West. The peak will shift westward in late October,encompassing much of the Pacific Northwest,western Tennessee and Kentucky,and southern Missouri and Illinois.Early November is predicted to offer peak viewing opportunities in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Southeast Coast.
expert Insights on This Year’s Foliage
One long-range expert cautioned that this year’s fall foliage season will be marked by significant regional variations. “There will be drastic differences in fall foliage across this country this year,” the expert stated. “We expect vibrant colors across much of New England and the Midwest this autumn. Don’t wait too long to check out the leaves as they approach peak color. The fall foliage may not last very long this year.”
State-level reports corroborate this assessment. The maryland Department of Natural Resources noted on Friday that much of Maryland is at “midpoint, near-peak, or peak foliage,” with dry conditions and crisp temperatures creating ideal viewing conditions. However, Garrett County in western Maryland has already passed peak, with recent weather events contributing to leaf fall. Central Maryland is approaching peak, while the Eastern Shore is experiencing rapid color changes, especially in bald cypress trees.
Similarly, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and natural resources reported on Thursday that cold nights have pushed fall color southward across the state, making this week “prime time” to experience the beauty of Pennsylvania’s forests.

Meteorological fall, which began on September 1st, will continue through november 30th.Meteorological winter is set to begin on December 1st and will run through February, marking the end of the vibrant fall display and the onset of colder, quieter months.
