It sounds dramatic and like farewell.
Mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner (79) is causing great concern to his fans nine months before his 80th birthday. He shared a photo on his Instagram account that shows him on an inflatable boat, looking into the distance. The man, who otherwise loves extremes, has climbed the highest mountains in the world and has looked death in the eye more than once, appears extremely thoughtful in his posting.

“I’m coming to the end, that’s the reality! But I leave with a clear conscience knowing that I was a good person, did my best, was a loving father, a good friend and a good brother. Now it’s time to live my final dreams and love the people who mean a lot to me, but the most important thing is gratitude,” writes Messner with his photo.
Many fans then expressed concern, asked about the mountaineering legend’s health and praised Messner’s positive influence on how people interact with the mountains.
But Messner was probably misunderstood by many fans: he has not lost his will to live, he makes it clear!

He is currently in India, where he plans to stay until the end of the year, and gives the all-clear in the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”: “I’m fine.” Nobody has to worry about him. “But I’m not in my twenties or sixties anymore.” So what did he want to say with the Instagram post? “I am coming to the end of my life and I accept the fact. I don’t close my eyes to reality.”

Of course, said Messner, he wants to continue pursuing projects and is thinking about new ideas that he still wants to implement – like his current trip to India, which is a study project about the mountains.
