Fedora 39 beta offers the best performing Linux distribution I have seen in a long time

Even in beta, Fedora 39 is incredibly smooth and lightning fast.

The default Fedora 39 wallpaper is even awesome.

If you had asked me five years ago, I would have said that Fedora was the most suitable Linux distribution for those who knew what they were doing. I would never have assumed that I would eventually think that Fedora was on par with Ubuntu in ease of use. But here we are and the distribution that was once considered too “cutting edge” for new users is ready to serve any user of any level.

Since that change of heart, Fedora hasn’t become my daily operating system, but there were times when I considered it.

And, with the polish that developers are highlighting with the Fedora 39 beta, this open source operating system has become even more attractive.

Now, to be fair, much of that polish comes via GNOME 45, which includes improvements like:

Activity indicator. Faster search. Camera usage indicator. New default image viewer. New main applications. New workspace indicator. New privacy center and “About” panel (in system settings). New icon for the Calendar app. Many UI settings in the file manager.

As far as Fedora is concerned, there aren’t many notable changes. However, you will find the following short list of improvements/additions:

Colored bash indicator. Regular app updates. Many performance improvements.

There’s also a new System Details information pop-up found in the “About” section in Settings, which gives you lots of information about the hardware and operating system.

It’s all in the acting.

When I installed Fedora 39 beta I was surprised how little had changed on the surface. This seemed like little more than a refinement of Fedora 38. But then I started to notice something… performance.

For example, the developers stated that they had improved the search tools found in the Overview. After using it for a while, I found its claims to be a bit modest. Search in Fedora 39 beta is one of the fastest I have seen on any operating system. It’s almost as if the operating system anticipates what I’m looking for and presents it as I type.

The GNOME App Overview is where you can run a search for apps, files, and more.

It really is that impressive. I’ve gotten used to desktop search being pretty slow, so whatever the developers have done to improve search capabilities, congratulations.

Overall Fedora 39 (even in beta) seems faster than it should. Since it uses a full desktop environment (as opposed to a lightweight window manager or DE designed for slower hardware), Fedora 39 achieves a speed that it shouldn 39 t be able to achieve… and I 39 m working with a virtual machine that Only It has 3 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores. It shouldn’t be so fast.

And yet it is.

Apps open almost instantly and there’s no noticeable delay in anything. It’s smooth as butter and fast as lightning.

Application updates

As with any update, Fedora 39 beta includes a number of application updates, including:

GNOME 45
LibreOffice 7.6
Python 3.12
RPM 4.19
Vagrant 2.3
Perl 5.38
LLVM 17
Golang 1.21
FontAwesome6
Gcc 13.2
Binutils 2.40
Glibc 2.38

The look

I’m not a fan of dark themes so I was happy to see that the Fedora 39 beta shipped with a light theme as the default. Beyond the theme, Fedora 39 simply looks very polished, almost as if it was intended to look like it was ready to be used by aesthetically demanding people and even businesses that require a professional looking desktop operating system.

Is Fedora 39 right for you?

First of all, this is a beta version and I wouldn’t suggest anyone use it for production or daily use. But when Fedora 39 is officially released I will be more than happy to recommend this version to anyone regardless of their computer skills.

The good news is that the release of Fedora 39 is not far away. The expected date is October 17, 2023. Until then, you can always try the beta version (download it here ) as a VM or on a second PC.
