Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has significantly sharpened his rhetoric on the topic of Russian aggression in Ukraine in recent days. “It makes us the black hole of Europe. No one in the European Union, including Viktor Orbán, has made such statements,” says Peter Bárdy, editor-in-chief of the Slovak server Aktuality.sk. Even so, according to him, Fico does not really feel any love for Russia, according to Bárdy, it is pure political opportunism.

Journalist Bárda, who has followed Fico’s career intensively for many years and is also the author of the book Fico: Obsessed with Power, is convinced that the once “genius” politician has lost his compass and can no longer be thought of as a statesman capable of compromise.

“I wouldn’t dare to say that (Fico) will join the side of the West when the going gets tough. He doesn’t even know which side is good anymore. He’s not even looking for a good side anymore,” he claims, adding that the chairman of the Direction together with his entire aside, he focused on voters who in the past cast their votes, among other things, for Slovak fascists.

“Fico understood that these are his voters. He has to pamper them, take care of them and feed them with all the lies spread by (Russian President) Putin,” recounts Bárdy, who is also convinced that Fico’s current engagement is the engine of hatred in the entire Slovak society.

Is Fitz’s leaning towards Russia just a smoke screen to solve domestic problems? What is his real relationship with Russia? How does the Slovak opposition stand? Why does Fico Bárdy refer to him as an outcast (in translation, a freak, a loner, a bad person)?
