At the age of 83, a man’s house was set on fire by his son, who last year had already attacked his father with an ax
The fire caused by Paulo Sérgio dos Santos de Oliveira, 32, in his father’s house, 83, exposed a drama experienced by the family for years with the aggressions committed against the elderly man. The case took place on Friday afternoon (2), in the Parque do Lageado neighborhood, in Campo Grande. The fire completely destroyed the house where the two lived and is now being rebuilt by the victim’s other children.
To the Campo Grande News, the electrician Rafael Souza, 53, the author’s brother, said that for years the family has been going through moments like this with Paulo. According to him, the attacks began when the elderly man and Paulo still lived in a farm in the city of Sidrolândia and only got worse.
“He came to live with my father 4 years ago, but since he was 25 and he gives the family a lot of work. When they lived on the farm, he attacked my father at least four times. Ten years ago he even said he had a psychological problem and needed treatment. My father gave a lot of money, he even sold a heifer a month and he never went to the appointments or had the exams done”, said the electrician.
According to Rafael, last year Paulo even attacked his father with an axe. The elderly man was hit in the face and arm. He took at least three stitches and another son came from Mato Grosso to take him to the police station, but even so, he didn’t want to denounce the youngest.
“He was never punished for the things he did. Whenever he needs money he attacks my father. Destroys everything in the house. He knows that my father is sorry. We are five brothers, we tried to interdict him to at least report it, but he is lucid. There was a year when my father had to undergo medical treatment and when he returned home he had sold all the furniture”, said Rafael.
The family claims that Paulo does not use drugs and that the problem is his addiction to alcohol, which has been destroying family life. Still according to the brother’s report, the elderly man is unable to have a relationship with his grandchildren and other children because they all moved away, since they are unable to help him, as he refuses to denounce the aggressor.
“Our hands are tied, we can’t do anything. I’m sure that in a few days he’ll come back crying and my father will help because he feels sorry for him. A brother of mine lives next door, he was even arrested when he tried to defend our father and then he walked away because he was disgusted with the situation”, declared the electrician.
The burnt-out house was completely destroyed and now the children have joined together to rebuild it. The report was at the scene and also talked to the elderly, victim of the attacks. Still shaken by the situation and revolted by the attacks, he said he was afraid of Paulo and hoped he would move away.
“He had meningitis when he was born, he got very sick and it was always a lot of work. Now he drinks a lot. He doesn’t do drugs, but he drinks too much. I was fighting for him to work and be someone well off, but he didn’t want to and now I want him to stay away. I’m afraid he’ll come back and do worse”, said the elderly man who this time decided to represent against his son.
Regarding the request for help, Rafael stated that the family is rebuilding the elderly man’s house and that they do not need donations. Paulo was arrested after breaking objects at the UBSF (Basic Family Health Unit) Parque do Sol and threatening the servers there. He had to be restrained by a team from the GCM (Metropolitan Civil Guard), then he was sent to the Depac (Community Emergency Service Police Station) Cepol by a team from the Military Police.
