Alès, France – A 27-year-old man was arrested Wednesday evening after allegedly firing at police with fireworks following African Cup of Nations (CAN) semi-final matches. The incident unfolded in the Gard department, sparking a second arrest related to the disturbance.

Police Targeted After CAN Semi-Finals

The events occurred late Wednesday, January 14, after Morocco defeated Nigeria and Senegal beat Egypt in the CAN semi-finals.

According to authorities, the suspect, a resident of Saint-Martin-de-Valgégales, allegedly shot at officers from a vehicle. He was taken into custody immediately at the police station. No officers were injured during the incident.

What prompted the police response? Fireworks were directed at law enforcement following the conclusion of the African Cup of Nations semi-final matches on Wednesday evening.

A second individual was also arrested and placed in police custody, accused of interfering with the police intervention and verbally insulting officials. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of both individuals’ involvement.
