In Russia, the first case of infection with a new strain of the Delta Plus coronavirus was registered, the appearance of which caused concern among the World Health Organization.
According to a number of scientists, this strain is highly virulent and may be resistant to existing vaccines due to the nature of the mutation.
“The case is the only one and, most likely, imported,” Daria Danilenko, deputy head of the Smorodintsev Research Institute for Influenza, told Fontanka.
According to the doctor, the same strain was seen in isolated cases in the United States, Great Britain and a number of other countries; in India, several dozen cases of infection are known.
The expert noted that it is too early to draw conclusions about the danger of the strain due to the mutation, since “the mutation in the 417th position of the S-protein … is in the Brazilian version and in the South African version.”
She also stressed that according to the clinical picture in patients infected with Delta Plus, there is no reason to say that this strain is “more deadly”.
Rospotrebnadzor said they would check reports of the emergence of a new strain in the country. The department noted that such statements “are often not confirmed after a scientific examination.”
