(Time.news / AFP) – Australia has registered the first death from Covid linked to the current one outbreak in Sydney. A 90-year-old died a few hours after testing positive for swab; she was also the first locally infected in Australia to die this year.
Sydney is in its third week of lockdown but the number of infections continues to grow in a population that is mostly not yet vaccinated. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned that the restrictions will remain tight until there is a drastic change in numbers.
There have been 77 cases in the southeastern Australian state in the past 24 hours Covid and forecasts indicate over 100 for Monday; since the start of the new spike in infections in mid-June, Sydney has registered 566, a relatively low number compared to other major cities in the world but the Australian authorities have adopted a zero tolerance approach to counter the spread of the coronavirus.
So far the country has known just over 31,000 cases and 911 deaths out of a population of 25 million inhabitants. Only 10% of Australians have been vaccinated and the government has launched a new advertising campaign to encourage people to get immunized.
