Going to the cinema becomes an experience that involves all the senses, including the sense of smell. It happens on Saturday 5 June at Stensen Cinema in Florence, with an evening dedicated to perfume ea Caterina de ‘Medici.
The film will be screened in national preview at 8.30 pm “The perfumes of Madame Walberg” by Grégory Magne, French comedy that tells of the meeting between Anne Walberg, a refined and legendary creator of perfumes, and Guillaume Favre, the unusual and charismatic new chauffeur who is assigned to accompany her on her missions: a story on the road to discover the world of perfumes, their essences and the lands in which they are born.
After the film, the Spezierie Palazzo Vecchio, a Florentine brand that continues to pass on the secrets of Renaissance perfumery, will offer all participants a sample of the most representative fragrance, called “Caterina de ‘Medici”. Caterina at the age of 25 ruled over Imola and Forlì and proved that she could, alone, administer a state, preside over a government and command an army. Eight children, economic worries, political problems, continuous wars, did not prevent her, an unusual fact for a woman of her time, from being a student of pharmacy, medicine, chemistry and perfumery: she was the first to write a recipe manual for scented waters. , cosmetics and natural remedies.
The fragrance recreated by the Spezierie is inspired by its history and starts from a formula found in the cookbook: it is the recipe for an “odoriferous water”. The term “odoriferous water” in the Renaissance refers to oily waters, obtained with various techniques that allowed the odorous active ingredients of plants or animals to pass into a liquid medium: admirable water is described as excellent for washing the face, hands and the whole person, to be used two or three times a week, since “it makes the flesh young, and keeps those who wash with this water healthy”.
