Florentine summer, a thousand events in 120 days and the 15 “historic” festivals blocked by the pandemic

by time news

There are more “things to do” than days to do them, in this Florentine Summer. A thousand appointments in 120 days for 148 participating subjects. Plus fifteen festivals, the “historic” ones, which in 2019 began the three-year program and which saw the stop in 2020 due to the pandemic, for a total of another 235 evenings. Festivals that therefore now find themselves in the second season, with a view to 2022 for the third already on the launch pad. Despite being a shorter Florentine summer than usual, four months instead of six, the one that officially starts today, Palazzo Vecchio has almost kept the same investment: the classic million euros that has been the budget for the billboard of events for years, drops to a little more than 900 thousand euros, half of which paid by sponsors Gucci and Toscana Energia, and the remaining half by the municipal coffers.

The fifteen festivals that represent the backbone of the Summer are “The city of readers” from 26 to 29 August at Villa Bardini, i “Celebrated in music under the stars” from June to September, the music of Musart in piazza Santissima Annunziata (17-27 July), dance Future Perfect del Florence Dance Festival from 26 June to 29 July in the large cloister of Santa Maria Novella, the arena under the stars “Open cinema” at the Uffizi square from 28 June to 8 August, on Fantastic Circus at the Cascine from 6 to 21 September, the events organized by Controradio “Genius Loci” in Santa Croce from 21 to 25 September, the electronic music festival Lattexplus from 1st to 20th September, classical and jazz music strictly for ottonu dell’Italian Brass Week in August, the classic “Secret Florence” dedicated to the unusual places of the city from 10 to 23 June, the urban popular music of the Florence Folks Festival in July under the Varlungo bridge, the events on the terraces of Florence from above between Forte di Belvedere, Giardino delle rose, Arcetri and other “high” places, the North African culture of Festival au desert from 30 June to 2 July at the Cascine and in the cloister of Santa Maria Novella, the exhibition of painting, graphics and sculpture Copula mundi from 2 to 5 September at Parco del Mensola and on Florence Jazz Festival from 9 to 12 September in Oltrarno. With the addition of a literary salon created ad hoc for Piazza del Carmine. Plus there are the many events spread outside the festivals, in the suburbs and beyond, with a thousand appointments including music, readings, theater, many Dante-themed events for the eighteenth century. And some spaces still to be assigned – the call has closed, but the bureaucratic procedures must be completed, in about a week – such as the Anconella Park, the Horticultural Garden, the Rose Garden, the Argingrosso park and the Cascine Amphitheater with the adjacent Cornacchie meadow.

“We need optimism and Summer and culture can help bring it – launches as a kind of battle cry for Summer, Mayor Dario Nardella – Let this be the summer of optimism ». Ideation and coordination of the entire season are the councilor for culture Tommaso Sacchi: “It will certainly be a different Summer, without large numbers for health safety reasons and that we have tried to spread as much as possible to avoid creating inconvenience in limited portions of the city – she explains – but no less ambitious, with a varied program, mostly with free admission, capable of involving the most diverse audiences ».
