GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The No. 7 Florida Gators delivered a dominant performance Saturday night, dismantling No. 20 Arkansas 111-77 to secure at least a share of the Southeastern Conference title – their first regular-season championship since 2014. The victory, witnessed by a sold-out crowd and broadcast nationally on ESPN’s College GameDay, wasn’t just a win; it was a statement, showcasing a team peaking at the right time as the NCAA Tournament approaches. The Gators’ offensive explosion, coupled with stifling defense, left little doubt as to their superiority, marking the largest win over a ranked team in program history.
Florida (23-6, 14-2 SEC) overwhelmed Arkansas from the opening tip, building a lead that steadily grew throughout the contest. Seven players scored in double figures, a testament to the team’s balanced attack and depth. Junior center Rueben Chinyelu, with 12 points and 16 rebounds, moved to No. 4 on Florida’s all-time list for most defensive rebounds in a single season. The Gators’ 111 points represent their highest scoring output of the season, and they have now scored 90 or more points in six consecutive games against ranked opponents – a feat only accomplished by two other teams in the history of the AP Top 25, and not since 1990.
The margin of victory – 34 points – was particularly significant, representing the largest defeat of Arkansas head coach John Calipari’s career, surpassing a 34-point loss to Duke in 2018 when he was coaching at Kentucky, according to game reports. The win also extended Florida’s winning streak against ranked opponents to six games, the second-longest active streak in Division I basketball.
Gators’ Dominance on Full Display
The game quickly tilted in Florida’s favor. After a back-and-forth start, the Gators seized control with a 9-2 run, fueled by early points from their frontcourt. Despite a brief Arkansas response, Florida answered with a decisive 16-2 stretch, highlighted by three-pointers from junior guard Urban Klavžar. The Gators continued to pour it on, outscoring the Razorbacks 40-11 over an 11-minute span to build a commanding lead. Sophomore guard Isaiaih Brown added to the offensive surge with a personal 8-0 run, including a pair of three-pointers, as six players had already scored eight or more points before halftime.

The second half saw Florida extend its lead even further. A three-pointer by Klavžar with 14:23 remaining pushed the advantage to 30 points, effectively sealing the outcome. The Gators outscored Arkansas 17-6 to open the half, and later led by as many as 37 points after seven consecutive points from junior forward Alex Condon.
Klavžar Leads a Balanced Attack
While the Gators’ victory was a team effort, several players stood out. Klavžar proved to be a game-changer, making his first four three-point attempts and finishing with 14 points. Chinyelu’s double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds showcased his dominance in the paint, and he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Thomas Haugh led all scorers with 22 points, while Condon added 17. Brown and sophomore guard Boogie Fland, along with Xaiivan Lee, combined for 27 points, nine assists, and six rebounds, contributing to a remarkable performance where seven players reached double figures.
What This Win Means for Tournament Seeding
The Gators’ commanding victory over a ranked opponent solidifies their position as a potential No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Three of Florida’s six losses this season have come against teams currently ranked in the top six nationally, and all were on the road. Their current nine-game winning streak in SEC play, with six wins by 19 or more points, further strengthens their resume. Florida’s ability to consistently defeat ranked opponents – they’ve won six straight – is a compelling argument for a top seed.
Coach Todd Golden’s team is also demonstrating a newfound consistency from beyond the arc. They were shooting 58% from three-point range at one point in the second half, finishing at 42.1% for the game. This improvement in three-point shooting, coupled with their dominant frontcourt – which out-rebounded Arkansas 51-31 and outscored them 56-44 in the paint – makes the Gators a particularly daunting matchup for any opponent.
Up Next: A Chance to Clinch the Outright SEC Title
Florida will remain at home to face Mississippi State on Tuesday, March 3, at 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network. A win against the Bulldogs (13-16 this season) would secure the outright SEC regular-season championship for the Gators, avoiding a share of the title.
The Gators have proven they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. Their dominant performance against Arkansas is a clear indication of their potential for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
