Tamarac Vice Mayor Honored by Florida Panthers for Black Excellence

A spotlight shines on community leadership as Tamarac Vice Mayor Mike Gelin adn his wife, Shaheewa Jarrett, were recognized by the Florida Panthers as part of their ’28 Days of Black Excellence’ campaign. The initiative, running throughout February, celebrates impactful figures in the South Florida area.
Recognizing Community Impact
The Florida Panthers are dedicating the month of February to highlighting the achievements of business professionals and community leaders who are making a important difference in South Florida.Gelin and Jarrett were honored on February 14 for their respective contributions to the region. According to a team release,the Panthers will celebrate all 28 honorees during their Black history Night on february 24th at FLA Live Arena.
Gelin’s Dedication to Tamarac
Vice Mayor Mike Gelin was honored for his success as a South Florida business owner and his commitment to the Tamarac city Commission. He consistently advocates for Tamarac residents, focusing on improving their quality of life. Gelin’s work on the commission includes initiatives to enhance local parks, support small businesses, and improve public safety. He was first elected to the Tamarac City Commission in 2018 and has since become a prominent voice for the city’s diverse population.
Jarrett’s Contributions to Broward County
Shaheewa Jarrett, an attorney, received recognition for her professional accomplishments and extensive involvement in Broward County community organizations and nonprofits. She serves on the board of several local charities and actively participates in pro bono legal work, providing assistance to underserved communities. Her dedication extends to youth mentorship programs and initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion.

The City of Tamarac,where Vice Mayor Gelin serves,is a rapidly growing community in western Broward County. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, Tamarac has nearly 72,000 residents and approximately 2,000 businesses. The city’s population is becoming increasingly diverse, attracting families and individuals seeking a vibrant place to live. The median age in Tamarac is decreasing, indicating a growing appeal to younger residents.
The Florida Panthers will formally recognize Gelin, Jarrett, and the other 26 honorees at Black History Night on February 24th at FLA Live Arena.
