The prices they have dropped by only a tenth this May in the Girona regions. yes it is breaks the uptrend which had been registered since the beginning of 2023; but for now, almost imperceptibly. According to the data periodically made public by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), prices in Girona’s counties have dropped by just one tenth over the last month (-0.1%). The inflation continues to be noticed in the basket from day to day, because although the food has moderate the successive climbs, it is also true that filling the fridge now costs 11.5% more than a year ago. In parallel, among others, this May as well both clothes and shoes are put on (+2.8%) and tourist accommodation (+3.5%). On the contrary, the package made up of gas, electricity and fuels, as well as transport, are going down. And this helps moderate the interannual CPI by more than one point, which closes May at 2.8%.

As usual, they hide behind this average two realities. On the one hand, those products and services that become more expensive. And on the other hand, those others who went down – in this case, especially basic services and transport– and which, in turn, help to dampen the anger of others.

Within the first group – that is to say, those that go up in price – clothing and footwear stand out. During May, they became more expensive by 2.8% (note that in April they already did so by 7.9%). But at the same time, and because of the impact they have on the domestic economy, food also continues to rise.

Although they do it more moderately than in previous months, this May, in particular, the food has increased by 0.3%. And compared to a year ago, going to the supermarket and filling the fridge to get you through the week now costs, on average, a 11.5% more.

It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue in the coming months. And this, despite the fact that since the beginning of the year the state government abolished VAT of those products that had the reduced rate of 4% (such as bread, flour, milk, cheese and eggs). A measure that precisely expired at the end of this June, but that just yesterday, Moncloa already advanced that would be extended further to try to alleviate inflation.

In addition to clothing, footwear and food, among the groups of products and services that have also risen during May are tourist accommodation (+3.5%), restaurants (+0.6 %) and rents (+0.4%).

23.8% less

The counterpoint to these moose is, above all, the pack made up of basic services (light and gas) and fuels. Because they all end May with a new drop in prices. In this case, however, not as pronounced as in April (when it was -6.3%) because the drop is 1.5%.

If, instead of looking at the month of May, you go back a year, electricity, gas and fuels are now 23.8% cheaper than a year ago. And the drop in fuel prices, of course, is also noticeable in other services. Because during the last month, transport has become cheaper by 1.4% and vehicle rental, in turn, by 1.9%.

At the same time, during this May, tourist packages (-1.2%), household appliances (-1.4%), telephone and fax equipment or leisure and culture ( -0.5% each).

Year-on-year down to 2.8%

When tipping the scales, this time the descents weigh more and that makes The interannual CPI returned to moderate. In this case, more than one point (because it goes from 3.9% with which it closed in April to 2.8% this May).

Despite the decline, however, inflation continues to be evident. Because all these increases are added to the historical records that had been reached – the INE data go back to January 1993 – when the interannual CPI had soared above 11%.
