Food Poisoning Outbreak Affects Hundreds of Students in Indonesia’s Free Meal Program
A widespread food poisoning incident has sickened hundreds of students across Maluku and North Sumatra, raising serious questions about the safety standards of Indonesia’s government-run free nutritious meal program. Despite the growing concerns, President Prabowo Subianto has reportedly downplayed the severity of the situation.
At least 170 students from four schools in the Kiratu subdistrict of West Seram Regency,Maluku,exhibited symptoms of food poisoning on Monday after consuming government-provided meals consisting of rice,eggs,tofu,and vegetables.Affected students, ranging from kindergarten through high school, experienced nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The situation quickly escalated, with reports of severe symptoms emerging. According to a local village head, several students displayed alarming signs, including bluish facial discoloration. “Some students even vomited blood, and others had foam coming from thier mouths,” the official stated, as reported by Kompas.com.
The sheer number of cases overwhelmed the local Kiratu Community Health center (Puskesmas), forcing medical personnel to establish a temporary treatment area utilizing military tents and foldout beds to accommodate the influx of sick students.
In response to the crisis,the West seram Regency Management has temporarily suspended all free meal kitchens in the region,pending a thorough investigation into the cause of the outbreak. The suspension aims to prevent further illness and allow authorities to assess and rectify the food safety protocols.
Similar incidents were reported in North Sumatra, with dozens of students experiencing similar symptoms after eating meals from the same program. Authorities are investigating whether the cases are linked to a common source of contamination. Initial investigations point to potential bacterial contamination of the eggs provided to the schools.
Health officials have collected food samples and are conducting laboratory tests to identify the specific pathogen responsible for the outbreak. The Ministry of Health dispatched a team of epidemiologists to maluku and North Sumatra to assist with the investigation and provide support to local health facilities. As of Wednesday, over 300 students across both provinces have sought medical attention.
The Indonesian government has pledged to review and strengthen food safety protocols within the free nutritious meal program. President Subianto, facing mounting criticism, stated that those responsible for any negligence will be held accountable.
