Food prices hit a 10-year high

by time news

The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) general food price index as a whole peaked since July 2011 at 133.2 points. This is 3.9 points (3.0%) higher than the September figure and 31.8 points (31.3%) higher than the October 2020 figure.

Cereals rose 3.2% from September and 22.4% from last year. The FAO believes that lower yields in Canada, Russia and the United States and a decline in the supply of high-quality wheat, which mainly account for most of the increase in world average prices, contribute to the rise in grain prices. The rise in corn prices is due, according to the FAO, high demand for biofuels.
