Researchers analyzing data from 5,132 adults using the MyNetDiary app discovered that people who logged their food six to seven days per week lost an average of 11.33 percent of their body weight over six months, according to a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Weight management often feels like navigating an endless list of rigid rules, calorie targets, and complicated plans. Yet recent scientific investigations are turning up simpler behavioral patterns that may yield measurable results. A pair of published studies point to specific daily habits—ranging from regular meal logging to consistent eating schedules and dietary repetition—that correlate with meaningful weight loss.

Tracking Frequency and Weight Loss Outcomes in App Users

The findings published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research evaluated app-based food tracking among thousands of adults. Users who tracked food six to seven days per week lost an average of 11.33 percent of their body weight over a six-month period. By contrast, individuals who tracked fewer than two days per week lost 6.84 percent on average.

The retrospective analysis examined data from 5,132 adults drawn from a pool of more than 412,000 new users on the MyNetDiary nutrition-tracking app after applying participation and follow-up requirements. Participants averaged 42 years of age with a starting weight of roughly 202 pounds, and nearly 73 percent of the cohort were women. Eight out of 10 people in the most frequent-tracking group lost at least five percent of their body weight, a threshold considered clinically significant. More than 56 percent of the group logging two or fewer days per week also reached the five percent benchmark, averaging a 7.35 percent loss.

Researchers noted that results improved steadily as logging frequency increased, with each additional tracking day per week associated with 35 percent higher odds of losing at least 5 percent of body weight after adjusting for age, sex, and starting body mass index. Both authors of the study worked for MyNetDiary; one was the company’s chief executive officer, co-founder, and an equity holder, while the other was a registered dietitian nutritionist employed by the company.

Consistency also appeared in streak lengths. Users who recorded their food intake for more than 90 consecutive days lost an average of 11.55 percent of their body weight, whereas those maintaining streaks of seven days or fewer lost 4.21 percent. However, the study authors emphasized that the data shows an association rather than proof that food logging caused the weight loss, noting that variables such as motivation, physical activity, sleep, diet quality, and weight-loss medications were not tracked in the analysis.

Dietary Repetition and Caloric Stability Over 12 Weeks

A separate study published in Health Psychology examined 112 adults over a 12-week intervention period to explore how repetitive eating behaviors and caloric stability influence weight management. Researchers used relatively straightforward self-monitoring tools to explore whether repetitive eating patterns predicted weight loss over the 12-week period, asking participants to log their food intake using the Fitbit app and to weigh themselves using a scale provided by the study.

Beyond what and how often people track, researchers are also examining the timing of meals. A study led by a team from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in Spain analyzed diet and weight data from 7,074 individuals aged 40 to 65. The findings indicated that early breakfast and early dinner with no eating in between were associated with lower body mass index (BMI) scores after five years.

Epidemiologist Luciana Pons-Muzzo of ISGlobal noted that extending the overnight fast while aligning meals earlier in the day corresponds more closely with internal circadian rhythms, which run on a 24-hour cycle and deliver bodily cues about when to rest and when to wake. Our results, in line with other recent studies, suggest that extending the overnight fast could help maintain a healthy weight if accompanied by an early dinner and an early breakfast, Pons-Muzzo said, adding that eating earlier in the day is more in line with circadian rhythms and allows for better calorie burning and appetite regulation. The team also conducted a cluster analysis to group participants based on their eating habits, finding that later breakfast timing and more frequent eating were associated with higher BMI, while longer overnight fasting was associated with lower BMI, with associations particularly evident in premenopausal women.

Meanwhile, as related drugs like Ozempic, or semaglutide, and Wegovy dominate discussions of weight loss, Stanford Medicine clinicians—including endocrinologists, bariatric surgeons, and lifestyle medicine specialists who prescribe GLP-1 agonists every day—point out that biological hormone systems can be dysregulated in people with obesity or Type 2 diabetes. Dan Azagury, MD, medical director of Stanford’s Lifestyle and Weight Management Center, described the GLP-1 hormone as a food thermostat in your gut that detects what has just been eaten and tells the body to process those calories.
