It is a symbolic invitation in a context of increasing anti-Semitic acts in France. Emmanuel Macron will welcome members of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (Crif) to the Elysée on Monday evening to mark the 80th anniversary of the organization.

The head of state will give a speech, as will the president of Crif Yonathan Arfi, from 6 p.m., said the Elysée. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin will also be present.

“Explosion” of anti-Semitism since October 7

The number of anti-Semitic acts recorded in France quadrupled last year, to 1,676 compared to 436 in 2022, according to the latest Crif report. The Council deplores an “explosion” of these acts after October 7, the date of the unprecedented attacks by Hamas against Israel which led to the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

Then president, François Hollande also invited Crif to the Elysée, ten years ago, for his 70th birthday.
