Scrapped “Doctor Who” Scenes Reveal Alternate Ending, Uncertain Future for BBC-Disney+ Partnership

A discarded party scene from the latest season of “Doctor Who” has revealed a dramatically different path for the show’s storyline, alongside growing uncertainty surrounding the future collaboration between the BBC and Disney+.

The season finale, while concluding the narrative arc of the current Doctor, reportedly underwent significant changes during reshoots in february. actress Carole Ann Ford, best known for her role as Susan Foreman, the Time Lord’s granddaughter, recently detailed scenes she filmed that ultimately did not make the final cut. These scenes, she explained in an interview with Cult Box, were intended to further develop her character’s return and her connection to the young character Poppy.

Ford described a poignant scene where she was to be depicted holding hands with Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipp, a three-year-old actress, while observing the newly regenerated Doctor, played by Ncuti gatwa. “You didn’t see the episode, which was to sort of introduce my coming back, where I was holding hands with a beautiful little tiny black child…And we were watching our newly-embodied grandfather, who was now Ncuti [Gatwa], and watching him have a splendid time singing and dancing in a party in a shop opposite where we were,” Ford recounted. Her character, Susan, was meant to express a longing to reconnect with her grandfather, questioning his survival and transformation.

Did you know? – Carole ann Ford originally played Susan foreman in the very first episode of “Doctor Who” in 1963, alongside william Hartnell as the First Doctor. Her recent return marked a significant moment for long-time fans.

However, showrunner Russell T Davies opted for a less open-ended conclusion, resulting in the abandonment of the Poppy storyline. This decision redefined Poppy’s parentage, establishing her as the daughter of Belinda and a human man. The narrative shift ultimately lead to Gatwa’s Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper.

Pro tip: – Reshoots are common in television production, especially for high-profile shows like “Doctor Who.” They allow for adjustments to storylines, pacing,or visual effects based on initial feedback.

The fate of the BBC and Disney+ partnership remains unclear. The two media giants are not expected to publicly announce thier future plans until after the premiere of the spin-off series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” slated for release next year.Until then, the future of “Doctor Who” and the collaborative venture hangs in the balance.

Reader question: – What do you think motivated the showrunner to change the ending? Was it creative vision, fan feedback, or external pressures from the BBC or Disney+?
