Foreigners in Sri Lanka to Receive Driver’s Licenses from April 15, Minister of State Announces

Minister of State Lasantha Ashiyawanna has said that arrangements will be made for foreigners applying for driver’s licenses in Sri Lanka to receive them from April 15.

He mentioned in the press conference held today (22) that this driver’s license can be obtained while coming out of the airport.

According to this, 25 dollars will be charged for driving licenses for one month, 50 dollars for driving licenses for three months, 75 dollars for 6 months and 200 dollars for driving licenses for more than one year, he said.

Compensation amount

The Minister of State has also mentioned that the scheme to provide immediate compensation to the victims of road accidents without court proceedings has been started from March 1st.

Accordingly, by applying to the relevant insurance company within one year of the accident, one can get a compensation amount of up to 5 lakh rupees and facilities will be provided to get that amount at any branch of the insurance company located nationwide.

In this regard, he further commented, “Many projects have been implemented to limit road accidents as per Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe’s mandate. It is also known that road accident victims face many problems.

As a result of ongoing discussions between the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and the insurance companies, a work plan to provide quick compensation without court action was launched from 1st March.

This scheme will be implemented only in relation to accidents after 1st March. The village service officers have been informed about this action by the police and divisional secretaries,” he said.
