For the first time in Tamil Nadu, tiger cubs are being trained to hunt in Valparai.

A tiger cub was rescued on September 27 last year in the Moody’s Estate area near Valparai in Coimbatore district on the verge of dying with injuries. The 8-month-old cub was treated in solitary confinement with thorny pig thorns on its body. The one-and-a-half-year-old cub (16 months old) is now healthy and has gained 140 kg.

The Coimbatore District Forest Department is taking steps to train the tiger cub in hunting as it may not be able to survive without the habit of hunting if the tiger cub is left in the wild in this environment. For this purpose, multi-layered protection facilities such as wire fence, cage, electric fence and earthen moat around the cage have been made in an area of 10 thousand square feet within the dense forest area under the Manampalli Forest Reserve.

The tiger cub was placed in a cage equipped with automatic CCTV cameras at a cost of 75 lakh rupees. It is being trained to hunt away the small animals it consumes. Currently the tiger has been transferred from small cage to large cage.
