Former President Trump Criticizes “Woke” U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Following World Cup Loss
Former President Donald Trump has criticized the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team after their surprising loss to Sweden in the Women’s World Cup over the weekend. Taking to his newly launched social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed his views on the team’s performance and linked it to his criticisms of the Biden administration.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden.” He further accused some of the players of being openly hostile towards America, stating that no other country behaved in such a manner. Trump ended his post by remarking, “WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA,” specifically targeting player Megan Rapinoe.
Trump’s comments toward Rapinoe stem from her previous remarks during the 2019 Women’s World Cup. When asked if the team would visit the White House if they won, Rapinoe responded, “I’m not going to the f—ing White House.” As a progressive LGBTQ+ activist, she expressed doubt about being invited. At the time, Trump condemned Rapinoe’s comments on Twitter, stating that she should never disrespect the country, the White House, or the flag.
Continuing his criticism, Trump said, “Megan should first win before she speaks! Finish the job!” Rapinoe’s missed penalty kick during the recent Women’s World Cup marked the end of her impressive career in the sport. However, in 2022, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden, becoming the first soccer player to receive this prestigious honor.
The controversy surrounding the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and Rapinoe’s outspokenness has reignited discussions on patriotism, politics, and the role of athletes as activists. While some support Rapinoe’s stance, others view it as disrespectful to the nation and its symbols.
