Former San Francisco Police Department Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her husband Kevin Mannix, and their daughter Katie were found dead in a Marin County home on October 11, 2026, in a suspected double murder-suicide, authorities confirmed.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as 65-year-old Ann Mannix, a retired SFPD deputy chief and the department’s first female SWAT team leader, her 68-year-old husband Kevin Mannix, a retired sergeant, and their 24-year-old daughter Katie. Deputies discovered the bodies after responding to a 911 call reporting shots fired at a home in Strawberry, near Mill Valley, on Sunday afternoon. Kevin Mannix Suspected in Deaths of Family Members
Ann Mannix, who retired in 2021, was celebrated as a pioneer in the SFPD. Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association (SFPOA), described her as a trailblazer in our department
and noted her leadership in the Field Operations and Special Operations Bureaus. Kevin Mannix, who served 27 years with the SFPD before retiring in 2018, was identified as the suspected shooter by multiple sources. Their daughter Katie, a recent college graduate, was also found dead. Ann Mannix became deputy chief of the SFPD Field Operations Bureau in 2018 after becoming the first woman to join the department’s SWAT team, the Chronicle reported. She was assigned to oversee the Special Operations Bureau in 2019.
The sheriff’s office stated that the 911 caller, who safely exited the home, reported hearing “6 to 9 shots” before deputies arrived. Inside, they found three deceased bodies, with the nature of the victims’ relationships and the exact circumstances under investigation. This appears to be a double murder-suicide,
said Marin County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Miguel Almaguer, though no motive has been disclosed. The home, owned by the couple, is located in the unincorporated community of Strawberry, east of Mill Valley.

Community and Colleagues in Shock
The tragedy left the SFPD and local community reeling. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew expressed profound grief
in a statement, while Supervisor Matt Dorsey called Ann Mannix a trailblazer in law enforcement.
A growing memorial of flowers has been left outside the home on Strawberry Circle, a normally quiet street just outside Mill Valley. For me it’s very devastating.
I can’t believe it happened here and it’s scary.
That was law enforcement too that’s involved,
said neighbor Karla Cervantes.
Former SFPD Interim Chief Toney Chaplin described the event as The last thing you expect to hear is they’re gone.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said there was no ongoing threat to the community and that deputies made a small perimeter around the home before safely entering. Inside, they discovered the three deceased bodies. The sheriff’s office also said that someone called 911 on Sunday evening to report shots fired, and that person was able to safely get out of the house. Authorities have not yet identified the caller.

Authorities Await Autopsies to Determine Motive
Authorities have not yet released the shooter’s motive, and investigators are awaiting a search warrant to examine the home in detail. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office scheduled autopsies for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to determine causes of death. No threats to the public were reported, and the scene was secured. The sheriff’s office said autopsies for the three decedents were scheduled for Tuesday, with the nature of the victims’ connections to one another remaining under investigation.
The Mannix family, who had lived in the Strawberry neighborhood for two decades, remained largely private. Neighbors described the home as quiet, with a tall wooden fence separating it from the community. The case underscores the personal toll of such tragedies, with the SFPD and local residents grappling with the loss of three lives. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office stated that the investigation is in the early stages and that more details would be released as it continued.
