Fort Lauderdale Airport will remain closed until Friday morning

Florida ∙ Rain in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday triggered flash flooding and emergency conditions in Broward County. Drivers were forced to abandon their cars, schools were closed and the airport was closed until 5 a.m. Friday.

Fort Lauderdale recorded 25.91 inches of rain in 24 hours, according to preliminary reports from the National Weather Service office in Miami.

Two weak tornadoes also touched down in Broward County on Wednesday, according to the Miami National Weather Service. A flash flood warning for Broward County is in effect until 7:30 p.m., the National Weather Service said.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. According to the Weather Forecast Center, isolated flooding is possible this afternoon, with locally heavy rainfall of 1-3 inches per hour.
