A coordinated air strike by British and French forces targeted an underground weapons storage facility utilized by the Islamic State group in Syria, according to the British Ministry of Defense. The joint operation demonstrates ongoing international commitment to dismantling ISIS networks. The attack successfully targeted an ISIS weapons cache, bolstering efforts to degrade the group’s capabilities in the region.

The operation unfolded on the evening of January 3, with British Typhoon FGR4 fighters, supported by a Voyager tanker aircraft, working in tandem with French aircraft. They employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of tunnels leading to the underground storage facility. The location was situated in the mountains north of Palmyra, the ancient city in central Syria.

“Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of tunnels leading to the site; Although a detailed assessment is now being carried out, preliminary data indicates that the target was successfully hit,” the Ministry of Defense stated. Officials confirmed that the strike did not appear to pose any risk to civilian populations.

Did you know? Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been repeatedly targeted by ISIS, highlighting the group’s disregard for cultural heritage.

This action follows the recent detention of Taha al-Zubi, also known as Abu Omar Tabiyah, an influential leader within the Islamic State organization, along with several of his associates in Syria. Furthermore, the United States conducted extensive strikes against numerous ISIS targets on December 19 in Syria, responding to an attack on American personnel.
