From Kampala to Curitiba, the ecological leap

In May 2016, the World Health Organization published a report on air pollution in cities. In this study, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, appears as one of the very polluted cities. The rivers of the capital are invaded by rubbish, the mostly old vehicles spitting tons of black smoke. Reducing pollution has therefore become one of the policy guidelines of Kampala City Hall. The city, which is already suffering the consequences of climate change with more and more flooding, is therefore trying to conduct a dynamic environmental policy to change the habits of institutions and inhabitants. Curitiba, la ville or “all good”

Curitiba is a metropolis of almost 2 million inhabitants. Located in the south of Brazil, the capital of the state of Parana is in the top 10 of the greenest cities in the world, and sets an example in Latin America as being the pioneer in terms of sustainable development, where it is nicknamed “Model City of South America”. At the political level, ecology is a central pillar from which the other problems of the city such as education or health are resolved. A report by Caroline Lefer.
