Argentine AI-Animated Short “The Day You Love Me” Wins Top Prize at Japan AI Film Festival
A groundbreaking animated film utilizing generative AI, “The Day You Love Me,” has garnered international acclaim, securing the Special Jury Prize at the inaugural Japan AI Film Festival.
The animated short, directed by Matías Mera and produced by the University of Buenos Aires alongside Cráneo Films, premiered at the 3rd FIC.UBA last October. The film is a tribute to Carlos Gardel, the iconic tango singer who died 90 years ago in Medellín, and reimagines his life through a unique blend of animation and digital aesthetics powered by artificial intelligence.
“The Day You Love Me” traces Gardel’s journey from humble beginnings to international stardom, illustrating his pivotal role in creating the tango song, his prolific film career – starring in over a dozen movies – and his pioneering work in early music videos. The narrative highlights key moments in his life, including performances at the Paris Opera and in New York studios.
The project’s use of AI represents a significant step forward in the preservation and reinterpretation of cultural figures, offering a fresh perspective for younger audiences. According to a statement from Cráneo Films, “This achievement, in the first festival where we exhibited the film, is a testimony to the enormous work and trust placed by the University of Buenos Aires in this project.” The director further emphasized the film’s resonance, stating, “The reception of this Argentine story thousands of miles away underscores the lasting impact and power of Gardel as an icon of Argentine culture to connect with audiences on the other side of the planet, in Asia.”
The Japan AI Film Festival, the nation’s first international celebration of AI-powered storytelling, aims to foster innovation, dialogue, and diversity through collaborations between humans and AI. The festival, which concluded on Tuesday, November 5th, at the Tokyo Innovation Base, brought together filmmakers, technologists, researchers, and audiences to explore the evolving landscape of AI cinema.
