A thrilling broadcast is set for December 12th as ORF Radio Salzburg presenter Sebastian Grandits attempts to conquer three of the most challenging ski runs in Austria’s Gastein Valley, live on air from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is part of the station’s annual ORF-Radio Salzburg Wintertour.
The ambitious undertaking will see Grandits test his skills – and his thighs – against the formidable terrain of the Gasteiner Bergbahnen ski area. The slopes reach an altitude of 2,650 meters, with some runs boasting an impressive altitude difference exceeding 1,000 meters.
The “Three Heroes” Challenge
Central to Grandits’ challenge is the famed “Die Nord” piste, a grueling ten-kilometer run that demands both endurance and expertise. According to a station representative, conquering “Die Nord,” along with “The Infinity” and “Speedline 100” – collectively known as “The Three Heroes” – is considered a true test of a skier’s mettle. “Anyone who has conquered all three slopes can truly call themselves a hero,” the representative stated.
The ORF-Radio Salzburg Wintertour isn’t solely focused on athletic feats. The broadcast will also delve into the broader world of skiing, exploring topics such as the evolution of ski fashion over the decades, identifying the most celebrated slopes in Salzburg, and offering expert advice on perfecting the carving swing.
Beyond the Slopes: A Snow Groomer Dream
Grandits’ adventure extends beyond simply skiing the challenging runs. He harbors a long-held ambition to experience the slopes from a different perspective: operating a snow groomer. “Moderator Sebastian Grandits has already had many exciting experiences, but he still has one big dream: he really wants to ride on a snow groomer one day,” a source close to the production team revealed. Whether this dream will become a reality during Friday’s broadcast remains to be seen.
Grandits will be supported throughout the event by Simon Jaritz-Rudle from the radio studio. A series of ten photographs will accompany the broadcast, offering viewers a visual glimpse into the action.
