Rays, Angels, and Reds Complete Multi-Player Swap

A flurry of activity saw three teams reshuffle their rosters with a complex trade involving key players.

  • Josh Lowe, previously with the Rays, will now play for the angels.
  • Gavin Lux, formerly a Los Angeles Dodger, is now a member of the Tampa Bay rays.
  • Brock Burke, a World Series champion, heads to the Cincinnati Reds.

Lux, who spent the first five years of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers before being traded to the Reds prior to the 2025 campaign, has appeared in 140 games, recording five home runs and 53 RBIs while maintaining a.269 batting average, .350 on-base percentage, and .374 slugging percentage. He recently secured a one-year,$5.5 million contract with the Reds, successfully avoiding arbitration.

Did you know? – Gavin Lux was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2016 MLB draft. He quickly rose through the minor league ranks, becoming a highly-regarded prospect before making his major league debut in 2019.

The Rays aren’t just getting Lux in this deal. They’re also adding some developmental upside in Chris Clark, a 24-year-old who spent much of the 2025 season in Single-A ball, posting a 5.50 ERA across 20 appearances.

This marks a new chapter for Lowe, who made his major league debut with Tampa Bay in 2021. Over the last three years, he’s blossomed into a key contributor, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 40 runs while slashing .220/.283/.366 in 108 games during the 2025 season. The 27-year-old signed a $2.6 million deal with the Rays to avoid arbitration.

Pro tip – Multi-team trades are often completed to facilitate salary shedding or to help teams address multiple needs together, making them complex but potentially beneficial for all involved.

Burke, entering his sixth MLB season, brings a championship pedigree to Cincinnati. He won a World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023. After a difficult start to the 2024 season, he was designated for assignment by the Rangers and subsequently claimed by the Angels. He rebounded in 2025, delivering a strong performance with a 3.36 ERA and 52 strikeouts over 61.2 innings.

Reader question – How do you think the Rays will utilize Gavin Lux,given their existing infield depth? What role do you foresee him playing in their postseason push?
