From a backyard office in Ballarat, Australia, to a global leader in mining technology, Gekko Systems has quietly revolutionized how the world extracts and refines vital minerals. The company, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, didn’t set out to disrupt an industry; it began as a practical solution to a specific problem, born from the ingenuity of a young couple and a chance opportunity in gold mining. Today, Gekko Systems’ innovations are integral to the production of everything from smartphones and televisions to electric vehicles, impacting supply chains worldwide.
The story of Gekko Systems is a classic startup tale, but with a distinctly Australian flavor. Elizabeth Lewis-Gray and her husband, Sandy Gray, acquired a small business in 1996 and quickly realized the need for more efficient equipment. Rather than relying on existing solutions, Sandy, a multi-award-winning inventor who left school at 17, began developing his own. This initial drive to reduce costs and improve processes laid the foundation for a company that would become synonymous with innovation in the mining sector. The company’s success, Lewis-Gray says, was never a foregone conclusion. “We had the drive to create a business that represented our values, and was competitive and global,” she explained. “When we started Gekko, we just wanted to survive and craft enough to pay the housing loan. We never in a million years thought it would get this big, or would be so successful, or that we would have such a strong brand name globally for innovation.”
A Catalyst in Gold Mining
A pivotal moment for the fledgling company came with an opportunity to operate a Jamieson gold mine. This hands-on experience allowed Sandy Gray to showcase his talent for problem-solving and invention. It was during this period that the seeds of Gekko Systems’ future success were sown. The company’s early focus on gold mining provided a crucial proving ground for its technologies and established a reputation for delivering practical, effective solutions. This initial success allowed Gekko Systems to expand its offerings and target a wider range of minerals and mining operations.
The Wolff Concentrator and Sustainable Mining
One of Gekko Systems’ most significant recent innovations is the Wolff Concentrator, a machine designed to improve water recycling during the refining process of gold and other minerals. As reported by The Courier, this technology plays a critical role in the production of essential components for modern electronics, including mobile phones, TVs, and cars. The development of the Wolff Concentrator reflects a growing emphasis on sustainability within the mining industry. By enabling more efficient water usage, Gekko Systems is helping mining companies reduce their environmental impact and operate more responsibly.
Growth and a Dedicated Workforce
Today, Gekko Systems employs 110 people in Ballarat, including a dedicated bio-business division. The company’s longevity, Lewis-Gray attributes to its world-class team, with 30 to 40 percent of staff having been with Gekko for at least a decade. This high level of employee retention speaks to a positive work environment and a commitment to fostering talent. Navigating the cyclical nature of the mining services industry hasn’t been without its challenges, but Gekko Systems has consistently demonstrated resilience and adaptability. “When you look back on it… you’re just sort of getting through those moments,” Lewis-Gray said. “Even when business is going up, it’s a challenge because you’ve got to increase your volumes, you’ve got to get more people in, you’ve got to get more contracts to make it work.”
Looking Ahead
As Gekko Systems looks to the future, the company remains committed to innovation and sustainability. The demand for critical minerals is expected to continue growing as the world transitions to a more sustainable energy future, and Gekko Systems is well-positioned to play a key role in meeting that demand. The company’s ongoing investment in research and development, coupled with its dedication to its workforce, suggests a continued trajectory of growth and success. Gekko Systems will continue to refine its technologies and explore new opportunities to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of the mining industry.
