General Clinical Nurse, new labor category in the IMSS

The general director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, recognized the 140,000 workers that make up the Nursing staff for their leadership, discipline and professionalism. He also presented his plans for the immediate future, such as the creation of the General Clinical Nurse category.

Within the framework of the celebration of International Nursing Day 2023, the unveiling of the bust of the nurse was carried out Beatriz Valdovinos Duranin the Square of the Illustrious Nursing Personnel of the IMSS in the Explanada de los Jaguares of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center.

What is a General Clinical Nurse?

During the ceremony, Zoé Robledo pointed out that work has been done with the National Union of Social Security Workers (SNTSS) to define the category “General Clinical Nurse”, and thereby address the Official Mexican Standard (NOM) 019 for Nursing Practice in the National Health System.

He informed that in the first week of June the diagnostic analysis for the implementation of this new category will be presented according to the functions and number of professionals.

The general director of Social Security explained that of the total number of places available at the Institute, 96 percent are covered. From 2018 to 2022, 25,166 nurses were added nationwide, and in the last year 2,445 more were hired. also created the Nursing Regulatory Coordination with the ability to make decisions.

In the country’s seven Nursing Schools, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral studies are offered.

For her part, the head of the Technical Coordination of Nursing Programs, Fabiana Maribel Zepeda Ariasrecognized the performance of the union in the healthcare, teaching and research fields in the medical units of the three levels of care, in the IMSS-Well-being program, in schools, centers, research units, nurseries and Social Security Centers.

First IMSS International Nursing Congress

Zepeda Arias affirmed that the Nursing staff is the largest labor force of the Institute and vital to provide services. He informed that on May 31 the First IMSS International Nursing Congress; “In 80 years there has not been a congress of this nature and it is good to start spreading knowledge and for the world to see what the greatness of the Mexican Institute of Social Security is.”

In his message, the Secretary General of the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the SNTSS, Dr. Arturo Olivares Cerda, stressed that it is opportune to promote measures to improve working conditions, as stated in agreement 149 of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

He pointed out that Nursing is expected to be the launching point to scale new professional horizons, therefore, work is being done to build solid educational paths to prepare for the highest level and access cutting-edge knowledge, as well as better work environments, for which have opened new specialties.

In her speech, the Director of Medical Benefits, Dr. Célida Duque Molina, recognized the Nursing staff for the important work they do every day for the benefit of the beneficiaries, for this reason “they are the heart of this institution.”

For her part, the award-winning member of the SNTSS CEN, Beatriz Valdovinos DuranShe recounted that since she was a child she felt a great attraction to a profession that will help others, to please her mother she took the entrance exam to the Teachers College, however, “Nursing ran through my veins.”

She recalled that in August 1972 she fulfilled her dream by joining the ranks of the IMSS as a Nursing intern at the CMN Pediatric Hospital, where she worked for 10 years. She was the founder of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopedics “Victorio de la Fuente Narváez” and witnessed the first generation of residents of this medical unit.
