Germany: Germans are forced to work until they are 80 years old.

by time news

About 1.04 million seniors aged 67 and over were forced to work last year. Almost 600,000 retirees continued to go to work at the age of 70 and 72,000 at the age of 80.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of employees aged 65 and over has doubled recently, according to germania.one.

In 2018, about 8% of pensioners worked on a regular basis, in 2009 this share was 4%. More than a third of working pensioners actually had to earn their living. Nearly two-thirds were employed because of additional income. In particular, self-employed workers also continue their professional activities beyond the age of 65. Their share is 37%, which is three times higher than that of all working pensioners (10%). Most often, retirees worked, for example, as taxi drivers, cleaners, in the office or as secretaries.

Politicians want more flexibility with regard to the retirement age. The left-wing parliamentary group (which asked the federal government for the numbers) called the numbers “tragedy.” CDU economic expert Carsten Linnemann demands: “Those who volunteer to work longer should be rewarded. The biggest relief would be a flexible retirement age instead of a hard age limit. So that poverty in old age is not a problem, we must strengthen the pension established by law ”.
