German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius intends to achieve a fundamental decision on the return of compulsory military conscription in the country even before the elections to the Bundestag, which will be held in the fall of 2025.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, the Spiegel portal writes about this after studying an internal document of the defense department.

Pistorius ordered that, by April 1, options for military service in Germany be provided that would correspond to the current security situation. “The Minister intends to reach a fundamental decision on conscription during this legislative period,” the publication cites excerpts from the document.

Previously, Pistorius spoke about the possibility of introducing compulsory military service in Germany according to the Swedish model. In the Scandinavian country, all school leavers are subject to military examination, but only a fraction of them end up serving on active duty. The army purposefully turns to those who, according to the military, are the best fit. However, according to local observers, Germany simply does not have enough barracks and military specialists to implement this option.

Compulsory military conscription in Germany was abolished in July 2011, after which the Bundeswehr transitioned to a professional army. Following his appointment as defense minister last January, Pistorius called the abolition of conscription a mistake but acknowledged it could not be corrected quickly.
