Germany: mashed potatoes thrown on a painting by Claude Monet by environmental activists

by time news

It only lasts a few seconds. Two environmental activists from the group “Last generation” projected mashed potatoes on the painting “Les Meules” by Claude Monet this Sunday before sticking their hand to a wall, at the Barberini museum in Potsdam, Germany, reports the RBB newspaper.

It is no coincidence that these activists attacked a painting by the impressionist Claude Monet. “Monet loved nature and captured its fragile beauty in his works, writes the association on Twitter. Why are many more people afraid of one of these images being damaged than of the destruction of our world itself? »

“People are dying of hunger, of cold, people are dying. We are living in a climate catastrophe. And all you’re afraid of is tomato soup or mashed potatoes on a chalkboard. Do you know what we are afraid of? We are afraid because scientists tell us that we will not be able to feed our families after 2050, ”launched the woman activist, after the action, in a video posted on social networks.

Already other actions in the world

Police confirmed to RBB that they had arrested the two activists. They are being investigated for property damage and trespassing, she said. The painting, however, would not have been damaged, the museum told the newspaper.

This is not the first punch operation by climate activists in a museum. On October 14, it was tomato soup that was launched on the painting “The Sunflowers” by Vincent Van Gogh at the National Gallery in London. Last May, in Paris, it was Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa who had been “pieced” by an environmental activist. These actions follow others, organized outside places of culture, as recently at the Mondial de l’auto in Paris.
