GGD Drenthe Delighted with Successful Visit to Rainbow Festival

The GGD Drenthe has expressed its satisfaction with its participation in the Rainbow Festival in Emmen. The health service attended the event with a special bus to provide information and administer vaccinations against hepatitis B.

Dianne Schiemer of the GGD shared her enthusiasm about the event, stating, “I lost my voice a bit yesterday. We have spoken to so many people. We are really very positive.” The GGD had initially set a target of speaking to a hundred people, but this number was exceeded. Schiemer added, “We actually talked to hundreds of people.”

Although the vaccination against hepatitis B couldn’t be provided at the festival, Schiemer remained unfazed. “We gave out a lot of flyers,” she explained. “People often don’t know everything, and then want to think about it first. That is also a benefit.” She expects people to come in for their injections at a later date.

Apart from discussing vaccination, the GGD also addressed various inquiries from the Rainbow Festival attendees. Conversations ranged from queer identity and coming out to topics like contraception and sexuality. “For some people, this was the first event they attended after their coming-out,” Schiemer shared.

One popular attraction at the festival was the condom council. Visitors had the opportunity to guess how many condoms were in a large glass jar. “Then you start talking to each other and ask if they are familiar with what the GGD does,” explained Schiemer. “90 percent actually had no idea.” She emphasized that many people are unaware that they can seek guidance from the GGD regarding sexual health. “Then some people’s mouths drop open.”

Schiemer believes that the GGD has successfully raised awareness about the services they provide. “We hope to reach a target group that may need us the most. People like to hear that they can contact us for free and anonymously.”

The GGD’s experience at the festival has left them wanting more. “And that could also be done at other festivals because young people under 25 really belong to our target group,” concluded Schiemer.

Overall, the GGD Drenthe’s presence at the Rainbow Festival was a resounding success, leaving a positive impact on attendees and potentially encouraging more individuals to seek out their services in the future.]
