Giants and Mariners make blockbuster trade: Robbie Ray for Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani

by time news

The Giants and Mariners pulled off a blockbuster trade on Friday, with starting pitcher Robbie Ray heading to San Francisco in exchange for outfielder Mitch Haniger, starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani, and cash considerations.

Ray, the 2021 American League Cy Young Award winner, will miss the beginning of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. Despite the injury, the Giants were willing to take a chance on the 32-year-old left-hander, who has three years and $73 million remaining on his contract with an opt-out after the 2024 season.

In return, the Mariners receive the familiar face of Haniger, who returns to Seattle after a six-year stint with the team. Haniger’s playing time with the Giants was limited due to injuries, but he recorded an .817 OPS and hit 107 home runs during his time with the Mariners. With two years and $36.5 million left on his contract, Haniger also has an opt-out available after the 2024 season.

DeSclafani, who went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA in 19 games for the Giants last season, rounds out the trade for the Mariners. The 32-year-old right-hander had his best season in 2021, going 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA, but missed the final two months of last season with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He is set to earn $12 million in the final year of his contract.

Both teams are hoping that the trade will bolster their rosters as they look to compete in the upcoming season. The move also reflects the changing landscape of Major League Baseball, as teams continue to make bold moves to improve their chances of success.
