Florian Hempel continues to cause a sensation. The Cologne player moved into the second round of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy. Gabriel Clemens qualified as the second German for the European Championship. The evening was bitter for Martin Schindler.
Mith Florian Hempel and Gabriel Clemens, two Germans are qualified for the 32 field of the European Darts Championship in three weeks. Hempel had already bought his ticket before the last event on the European Tour. Clemens made the participation perfect with a win in the first round of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.
The German number one took the difficult opening hurdle and beat the Englishman Luke Humphries 6: 4 with an average of 92.92. Clemens will now face South African Devon Petersen on Saturday and has promising chances to qualify for the round of 16.
Hempel defeats Bunting
Before that, Hempel had already moved into the second round. The Cologne man once again proved his good form and defeated Stephen Bunting 6: 5. Up to 3: 3 both had held their throw, then the 31-year-old sat down with two twelve-darters to 5: 3.
After a missed match dart to 6: 4, he had to accept the 4: 5 and 5: 5, but remained nervous and prevailed in the decider in eleven darts against the World Cup semi-finalist from England. After eleven legs, Hempel had a strong average of 94.46.
Martin Schindler also had to make the decision. The Strausberger had already led 5-2 against Ryan Searle. The 25-year-old played fantastic darts, was at an average of 102 at the time and had finished five of his six attempts. All the more astonishing that he was then unable to use any of his five match darts to achieve a well-deserved victory.
With a score of 5: 4, Schindler missed the double 18 before the highest possible finish waited in the decider: 170 points. “The Wall” hit the Triple-20 in the first and second attempts, but missed the bullseye by millimeters. Then he had three chances to clear the remaining 32 points. Schindler missed, and so the English punished the German to win over the double-20.
On Saturday it will continue from 1 p.m. in Gibraltar. Clemens has the eleventh match of the day against Petersen, Hempel is two pairings later. The former handball player has to deal with ex-rugby professional, world champion and number one, Gerwyn Price.
