The Girona cinemas they again surpassed, in 2022, the million viewers, two years later. Specifically, according to the SGAE 2023 Yearbook of Performing, Musical and Audiovisual Arts presented this week, in the province the twenty venues that operated sold 1,102,388 tickets, for a collection of 7.111.795 euros. Figures that allow us to give a little hope to a sector that was very affected by the pandemic and that, little by little, is starting to see the light of day.

The last time that Girona had exceeded one million spectators was in 2019, before the arrival of the coronavirus. That was a good harvest, with twenty cinemas open, equivalent to 90 screens, 1,837,193 spectators and 11,313,918 euros at the box office. In 2020, the arrival of covid swept everything away, with premises closed for many months. So in 2020 attendance fell to 419,974 spectators and still not 2.6 million in revenue. In 2021 the situation improved, but slowly: 752,883 spectators, who left a box office of 4,866,379 euros.

Despite the loss during 2022 of emblematic cinemas such asAlbéniz de Girona (it closed at the end of June), the demarcation achieved the best numbers of the last three years. “Last year’s collection of SGAE has returned to levels of 15 years ago”, he emphasized Antonio Onetti, president of the institution, showing hope that the statistics will turn around once Covid is overcome.

Regarding last year’s numbers, Girona was very close to those of Tarragona, where 1,238,748 tickets were sold, and 7,642,018 euros were collected. The province far surpasses the attendance in Lleida, which in 2022 was only able to gather 433,670 spectators who left a box office of 2,855,089 euros. In Catalonia, the Barcelona cinemas led the statistics (8,495,267 spectators / 57,021,043 euros), while in Spain a total of 59 million spectators was reached, a figure that improves the figure for 2021 (41 million ) but that has nothing to do, yet, in front of the 104 million viewers who gathered in theaters in 2019, before the pandemic. The top of the most viewed films is made up of Avatar: the sense of water; Minions: The Origin of Gru; Jurassic World: Dominion; Padre no hay más que uno 3 and Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness.

The data from the SGAE Yearbook also confirm the potential of the Girona exhibition chain Ocine, which last year managed 239 theaters throughout the State spread over 25 multi-screen complexes. In Girona Ocine has representation in the capital, in Platja d’Aro and Blanes. The Ocine Gavarres, in Tarragona, ranks tenth among the complexes with the most spectators in Spain (439,035).

By exhibition groups, Yelmo Cineplex is the chain with the most screens, specifically, 540. Cinesa, with 439 screens, is the next group in this ranking, although it loses 44 compared to 2021. Ocine, with 239 screens and a an increase of 62 in relation to the previous year, it is the third most powerful exhibition chain in the State, run by the Agustí family from its headquarters in Travessia de la Creu in Girona.
