Global Insolvencies Rise: Allianz Report

Global Bankruptcies Set to Rise in 2026, with Germany Facing Twelve-Year High

A new forecast from Allianz Trade predicts a concerning surge in corporate bankruptcies globally in 2026, with Germany poised to experience its highest insolvency rate in twelve years. The escalating economic pressures and ongoing geopolitical instability are creating a precarious environment for businesses, particularly newer ventures.

Fifth Consecutive Year of Rising Insolvencies

According to a report highlighted by Spiegel, this anticipated increase marks the fifth consecutive year of rising insolvencies worldwide. Analysts at the credit insurer project a five percent increase in bankruptcies globally compared to 2025. Germany is expected to see a one percent rise, translating to an estimated 24,500 cases – a level not seen in over a decade.

Economic Weakness and Trade Conflicts Fuel the Crisis

The primary drivers behind this bleak outlook are persistent economic weakness and escalating global trade conflicts. These factors are collectively straining businesses, limiting their ability to navigate challenging market conditions. “The risk of so-called domino effects is increasing noticeably,” a senior official stated, highlighting the potential for cascading failures throughout the economic system.

Young Companies Face Disproportionate Risk

The study identifies young companies as particularly vulnerable. These businesses, which have seen significant growth in both Europe and the United States, often lack the established financial reserves to weather prolonged economic downturns. Their increased presence in the market amplifies the overall risk of widespread bankruptcies.

AI Bubble Burst Could Trigger Further Losses

Adding to the concerns, Allianz Trade warns of a potential bursting of a speculative bubble in the field of artificial intelligence. Should this occur, Germany could face an additional 4,000 bankruptcies, exacerbating the already challenging economic landscape.

A Glimmer of Hope for 2027

Despite the grim forecast for 2026, Allianz Trade anticipates a slight improvement in the following year. The number of bankruptcies is projected to fall by approximately four percent to 23,500 cases in Germany. Globally, a one percent decline is expected, offering a tentative sign of recovery.
