Goal spectacle: Eintracht Frankfurt draws at SC Freiburg

by time news

Eintracht Frankfurt didn’t get beyond a draw at SC Freiburg. Michael Gregoritsch ensured Freiburg’s equalizer in the final phase.

SCF coach Christian Streich had to do without Röhl, who was suspended. After the 0-0 draw against RC Lens in the Europa League, Grifo moved back into the otherwise unchanged starting eleven.

Eintracht was missing Koch, who was banned from yellow, compared to the 2-2 draw at Union Saint Gilloise in the Conference League. Hasebe started in defense for him and celebrated his 300th competitive game for Frankfurt. Max also started in place of Nkounkou (bench).

Kalajdzic has to leave the pitch early – Marmoush scores

In the early stages, football was only played in fragments: initially, protest actions by fans caused interruptions. After just ten minutes, Frankfurt suffered a major setback in terms of personnel: Kalajdzic was injured without any influence from the opponent and had to leave the field injured. Knauff replaced him (11th).

There were no chances in this game for a long time, both teams were solid defensively. After almost half an hour, however, a mistake in the Freiburg defense favored Frankfurt’s lead: Keitel lost his footing on Max’s cross and was no longer able to intercept the ball. Marmoush thanked them and used the space they gained to make it 1-0 (27th).

Three more goals before halftime

The scoring had begun and so it didn’t take long before Freiburg scored with their first good chance: Sallai’s shot sent Trapp flying to the side and Doan scored to equalize (30′).

The equalizer gave the SCF a boost, but it was to be their downfall: Freiburg was countered in their own pressure phase, the ball came to Knauff via Marmoush, who scored with the first contact from full speed (35th).

Due to the interruptions at the beginning of the game, eight minutes were played in which Freiburg once again put pressure on the Frankfurt defense – and was rewarded: Because Hasebe Höler had stepped on her foot, Freiburg was awarded a penalty shortly before the break. Grifo converted to equalize again (45th + 5th).

Again interruptions – Knauff hits the corner

The second Freiburg goal was the 500th Bundesliga goal for Freiburg with Christian Streich in the dugout. But the SCF coach had to wait for more, because once again protests from the fans forced referee Stieler to interrupt the game. The referee sent both teams to the dressing rooms and the game continued after around 13 minutes.

The parallels to the first half didn’t end with the interruptions: Even after this restart, both teams had to sort themselves out again, then Frankfurt took the lead for the third time in this game: Marmoush passed it off after a dribble into the center to Knauff, whose shot went from hit the penalty area line at a right angle (72′).

Gregoritsch ensures Freiburg’s third equalizer

In the final phase, Gregoritsch became the decisive man. The Joker, who played his 50th Bundesliga game for Freiburg, scored with a header shortly before the end of regular time to equalize for SCF again (89th). At the end of an eventful ten-minute stoppage time, the Austrian even had Freiburg’s winning goal on his feet – but Tuta cleared just before the line (90th + 8th).

The Freiburg team continues in the Europa League against Lens on Thursday evening (6.45 p.m.). And the next English week is just around the corner for Eintracht: On the same day, Frankfurt will host Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa Conference League (9 p.m.).
