Gold Coast Crane Incident Prompts Emergency Declaration Amidst Severe Storm

An emergency declaration is in effect on the Gold Coast after a partial crane collapse and widespread power outages triggered by a powerful storm on Thursday. Authorities responded to reports of damage along the Gold Coast Highway at Southport around 3:15 p.m., initiating a safety perimeter and urging residents to shelter in place.

Storm Causes Crane Instability, Power Disruptions

Emergency services were initially called to the scene following reports of a compromised crane and downed powerlines. Fortunately, the Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed that no injuries were reported as a direct result of the incident. Responding to the escalating situation, Queensland Police invoked the Public Safety Preservation Act before 4 p.m., establishing an exclusion zone encompassing the Gold Coast Highway, North Street, Loders Creek, and the Broadwater. Residents within this area were instructed to remain indoors while crews work to secure the site.

Intense Weather Conditions Fuel Damage

The incident unfolded against a backdrop of severe weather. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts reaching 45 knots per hour – exceeding 80 kilometers per hour – at the Gold Coast Seaway. Aerial footage reveals the storm’s impact, showing overturned gazebos and minor damage to a nearby caravan park.

One Labrador resident described the storm as “intense and scary,” noting its rapid passage but significant force. The resident, who lives on the 12th floor, reported that windows rattled with a force comparable to that experienced during ex-tropical Cyclone Alfred. “Our heavy balcony furniture was being thrown around like it was paper, and our very heavy table was picked up by the wind and almost went over the railing,” the resident stated.

Thousands Left Without Power

The “small but intense” storm cells also caused widespread power outages across south-east Queensland. As of 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, approximately 8,000 customers were without electricity in Brisbane, Somerset, and the Gold Coast. Energex, the region’s energy provider, reported receiving approximately 15 reports of downed powerlines in the Southport area, alongside other property damage. Restoration efforts will commence once the area is deemed safe.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Remains in Effect

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of south-east Queensland at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The warning indicated the potential for damaging winds, large hailstones, and heavy rainfall across Brisbane, the Redlands, the Sunshine Coast, and the South Burnett. Additional warnings were issued at 5:30 p.m. as the storms continued to track north towards Gympie.

Emergency services remain on the scene, prioritizing public safety and working to restore normalcy following the disruptive weather event.
