Gold Futures Face Headwinds as Bank of Japan Rate Hike Overshadows Fed Cut Bets
Gold futures are experiencing increased volatility as the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) recent interest rate increase complicates expectations of further cuts by the Federal Reserve, while geopolitical developments surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict present a mixed outlook for the precious metal.
The BOJ’s decision to raise its policy rate to 0.75% from 0.5% – the largest increase in three decades – has significantly impacted market sentiment. This move, widely anticipated, signals a potential shift in global monetary policy and casts doubt on the likelihood of aggressive easing by the Fed. According to one analyst, the BOJ’s hawkish stance “could disrupt bullish bets on more interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve next year, potentially hampering further upside for gold prices.”
Thursday saw a brief rally in gold futures, briefly testing a high of $4409.45, before a sharp selloff ensued. Friday’s trading opened at $4366.75, with prices fluctuating between a high of $4367.20 and a low of $4336.67, currently settling at $4353, just below immediate resistance at $4369.44. Despite continued expectations of potential rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, gold appears poised for further declines.
The situation in Ukraine is adding another layer of complexity. US President Donald Trump expressed hope for a swift resolution to the conflict, with planned meetings between Russian and US officials in Miami. Simultaneously, the European Union has agreed to a substantial €90 billion interest-free loan to Ukraine, a breakthrough achieved after lengthy negotiations in Brussels. EU Council President Antonio Costa stated the loan is intended to address Ukraine’s military and economic needs over the next two years.
European leaders have indicated that the loan will be repaid only after Russia provides reparations for damages caused by the invasion, with the possibility of utilizing £185 billion in frozen Russian assets to cover the loan if Moscow fails to comply. While this geopolitical development could bolster bullish sentiment towards gold, a successful diplomatic resolution brokered by President Trump could trigger a further slide in prices.
Technical Analysis: Key Levels to Watch
On a daily chart, gold futures are currently confined within a narrow trading range of $4367.20 to $4336.85, positioned below the immediate resistance at $4369.44 and above the immediate support at $4342.65. This suggests a potential breakdown is imminent, which could drive prices to test the 9-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $4322.74. A failure to hold this support level could lead to further declines, with subsequent targets at the 20-day EMA ($4266.70) and the 50-day EMA ($4139.80). Conversely, a rebound could encounter selling pressure above the $4392 resistance level.

Examining a 1-hour chart, gold futures are attempting to maintain support at the 100-day EMA ($4345). A breach of this level could push prices towards the 200-day EMA ($4318), with a breakdown below that potentially triggering extensive bearish pressure. Traders anticipate potential late-day selling as bears appear to be gaining control amid prevailing market indecision.
