Good Friday is an important religious holiday in the Christian calendar that commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. In Germany it is not only a public holiday, but also a silent holiday. This means that no events will take place on this day – out of respect for the historic day of mourning and remembrance.
In large cities, for example, the Edeka at Munich Central Station and the Rewe at Cologne Central Station are open. A complete list can be found here:

- Edeka at Lichtenberg train station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m
- Edeka at Friedrichstrasse train station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m
- Edeka at Südkreuz train station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m
- Denn’s organic market at Gesundbrunnen train station: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m
- Rewe at Ostbahnhof: 6 a.m. to midnight
München
- Edeka at the main train station: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m
- Edeka at Ostbahnhof 8 a.m. to 11 p.m

It is definitely advisable to find out in advance whether these shops are actually open.
The shops are open on Easter days
- Maundy Thursday: Maundy Thursday is not a public holiday, so all supermarkets are open.
- Good Friday: Good Friday is a public holiday. Therefore the supermarkets and drugstores are closed.
- Holy Saturday: The shops are open because Holy Saturday is not a public holiday in Germany.
- Easter Sunday: The public holiday regulations apply on Easter Sunday and all shops remain closed.
- Easter Monday: The supermarkets and all other shops are also closed on this day.
