Name Change and Ecosystem Integration
Google has rebranded its AI-powered research tool, NotebookLM, as “Gemini Notebook,” signaling a strategic shift to align the product more closely with the company’s broader Gemini brand. The name change, announced on Thursday, follows the tool’s initial unveiling as “Project Tailwind” at Google I/O 2023. According to Google, the new name reflects the tool’s expanded role within the Google ecosystem, including deeper integration with the Gemini app and Google Search. The rebranding also includes a visual update, with the logo transitioning to a blue/purple Gemini gradient.

Google emphasized that Gemini Notebook remains a standalone product focused on research but will now “do more across the Google ecosystem.” This includes features like notebook access in the Gemini app and upcoming availability in Google Search’s AI Mode. The company stated, “It remains a standalone product focused on being your premier research tool, but it will now do more across the Google ecosystem.”
Technical Upgrades and Secure Cloud Computing
A key component of the update is the introduction of a “secure cloud computer” for each notebook, enabling users to write and execute code natively. This feature, part of the “Antigravity” coding platform, allows for complex data analysis grounded in sources. Google announced that the upgrade, previously available to Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with specific access tiers, will roll out to all Pro users on the web “over the coming weeks.”
The secure cloud computer also supports “entirely new output formats and deeper analysis,” according to Google. The tool now includes over 100 curated software skills to streamline workflows, such as generating PDFs, charts, and slideshows. A side-by-side evaluation of the upgraded version against its predecessor showed a 65% average win rate across core metrics, including accuracy, multilingual support, and large document analysis. Google noted improvements in advanced web research, achieving a 78.2% win rate against older models.
User Growth and Adoption Metrics
Since its launch, Gemini Notebook has grown to over 30 million users and 600,000+ organizations, according to Google. The tool has been adopted by businesses for tasks like creating interactive onboarding materials and by students for converting notes into audio and video summaries. Google highlighted that the rebranding does not alter the app’s core functionality, stating, “If you love the app in its current form, though, don’t panic—not much else is changing.”

The tool’s capabilities have expanded over the past three years, including interactive podcast generation, curated notebooks, video overviews, and support for more file types. Google also mentioned that third-party companies and startups have built upon NotebookLM’s features, such as podcast generation from source material and research tools.
Future Integration with Google Search and Gemini App
Google plans to integrate Gemini Notebook more deeply into its ecosystem, with notebooks becoming accessible in Google Search’s AI Mode “soon.” This integration will allow users to reference notebooks during searches, enhancing the tool’s utility for research and information retrieval. The company also noted cross-app synchronization between the Gemini app and the standalone Notebook, with further expansion expected as the tool becomes part of Search’s AI Mode.
Despite the rebranding, Google clarified that Gemini Notebook and the standard Gemini chatbot operate on the same models but serve distinct purposes. While the Gemini app focuses on general information lookup and summarization, Gemini Notebook is designed as a research tool for organizing sources, generating citations, and creating multimedia outputs like infographics and slideshows.
